Covalent Organic Frameworks (COFs) Tetraphenylsilane Ligand

A tectonic bridging ligand linker for COFs in applications of effective iodine and Hg2+ adsorption and high selective adsorption of carbon dioxide.

Tetrakis(4-formylphenyl)silane (TFPSi), CAS number 1055999-34-2, is a tectonic molecule with four 4-formylphenyl groups joined by a silicon centre. It has been predominantly used in development of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and coordination polymers (CPs).

Prepared by the bottom-up approach from TFPSi as one of the building blocks, 3D thioether-based COF JUC-570 demonstrated fast and high Hg2+ uptakes of 972 mg g−1 at pH = 5. It is believed that the isopropyl groups around the imine bonds greatly improved its chemical stability by effectively maintaining the pore shape and size, endowing a high Hg2+ adsorption capacity (619 mg g−1) and excellent cycle performance even at pH = 1.

MALP-2, also prepared from TFPSi, shows a largest adsorbed amount of 18.6 wt % CO2 (273 K, 1 bar), and high adsorption selectivity of COover N2 (22.5) and over CH4 (6.3). MALP-2 also demonstrated an excellent iodine vapor adsorption capacity (218.5 wt %) and remarkable solution iodine adsorption ability. The high chemical and physical stability, and excellent adsorption performances toward CO2, toxic organic vapor, and iodine show that MALP COFs are promising candidates for environmental protection.
